Job Vacancy: Ukraine-Based Research Assistant (Remote)

The Hague Centre for Strategic Studies is hiring a Ukraine-based intern

Are you interested in becoming familiar with various cutting-edge tools of collaborative, evidence-based policy analysis and research? Do you want to work with international experts on real-life projects, provide policy advice to various public and private customers, and add your name to international reports and publications?

The Hague Centre for Strategic Studies (HCSS) is looking for a new Ukrainian colleague to work on data-driven projects on (primarily but not exclusively Russia-related) defense and security policy. We have secured extensive funding from various transatlantic sources to ‘revolutionize’ how analysis in ‘Foreign, Security, and Defense Policy’ is done. This internship is remunerated and based on remote (internet-based) employment.

The role is a dynamic blend of substantive analysis (~50%), technical assistance and ‘vibe coding’ (~20%), and documentation/administrative support (~30%). You will be ‘smell-testing’ AI-generated results, helping improve our data workflows, and ensuring our projects are well-documented. Successful candidates will receive valuable hands-on experience in cutting-edge research techniques on various topics of relevance to international relations and security.

Our over-a-decade-long experience has shown that this is +a perfect opportunity for people who are planning to apply to international graduate schools—the acquired tools and skills, as well as research experience and international publications, will significantly increase your chances of acceptance and funding. Upon successful completion of the internship, a few interns will be offered permanent positions as research assistants.

About The Hague Centre for Strategic Studies

We are a highly respected independent think tank in the Netherlands that was spun off from TNO (the large Dutch Research and Technology Organization) in 2007. We work on strategic issues related primarily to international security for the benefit of Dutch and other European public (and, to a smaller extent, private) customers

Our Ideal Candidate:

  1. Is a last-year bachelor’s/master’s/PhD student or a mid-level analyst with an above-average academic record in Political Science (especially International Relations), Economics, or any other social science.
  2. Has a keen interest and preferably hands-on experience with Large Language Models (LLMs), or at a minimum, a strong willingness to learn and experiment.
  3. Is genuinely interested in international relations and evidence-based applied policy research.
  4. REALLY likes working with computers and software, is open to both qualitative and quantitative research, and is comfortable learning various software tools.
  5. Is extremely organized and would be willing and able to also deal with administrative tasks.
  6. Is at ease working online in an international team under (sometimes) stressful conditions.
  7. Is fluent in English, Ukrainian, and Russian (this is a requirement as most of our work is on Russia). Applicants with additional Chinese proficiency are also strongly encouraged to apply.
  8. Is a Ukrainian citizen (preferably) currently living in Ukraine (we strongly encourage people living in regions of Ukraine other than Kyiv to apply!).
  9. Is able to work entirely online and deliver results.

What You Will Learn and Do:

This job is ideally suited for people who want to deepen their knowledge of how to conduct top-notch research and be part of a team developing evidence-based projects for governments and international organizations. You will:

  1. Develop technical skills by learning tools such as (but not limited to): taxonomy building, corpus building, LLM processing, machine learning, data visualization/dashboarding tools (mainly in Python and R), automated event databases, Adobe Creative Suite, LibreOffice, Zotero, various bibliometric tools (VosViewer, CiteSpace), and Rizzoma.
  2. Embrace the ‘life-long learning’ concept and be willing to learn something new with each new research task.
  3. Be treated as a regular HCSS team member. The internship will be demanding and will require A LOT of self-learning and commitment.

Requirements:

  1. Successfully completed Bachelor’s/Master’s degree (4th-year Bachelor’s students can also apply).
  2. Keen analytical skills.
  3. Advanced English, fluent Ukrainian, and fluent Russian.
  4. Willingness to acquire new skills.
  5. Access to a decent computer AND reliable Internet (we realize this is an issue under war conditions and are willing to be flexible on this).
  6. Good communication and time management skills.
  7. Considerable stress resistance.

Conditions:

  1. A stipend of €1000 per month in return for a commitment of at least 40 hours per week for 3 months.
  2. The possibility of further employment as a research assistant upon mutual agreement and successful completion of the internship.

Additional Benefits:

  1. Assistance with letters of recommendation and the general application process to Western graduate (Master’s/Ph.D.) schools.
  2. Valuable work experience in one of the world’s recognized independent think tanks.
  3. The opportunity to receive authorship credit on HCSS publications, if merited.

Application and Selection Process

To apply, please send an email to [email protected] with the subject ‘your name/RA application’. Your application must include the following items:

  1. Your CV (in English). Please do NOT attach a picture to your CV. Candidates who do so will be disqualified.
  2. A single file containing:
    1. Part 1: An expression of purpose in English (max. 1 page), explaining why you want this internship at HCSS and how you fit the team. This can be submitted as one of the following: a traditional letter; OR a video (max. 5 minutes, please provide a link); OR a single-page visual infographic.
    2. Part 2: Your proudest LLM conversation. Please share a transcript of a conversation you’ve had with any LLM (e.g., ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude) on any topic. Add brief annotations to explain what makes you proud of this interaction (e.g., your prompting strategy, the quality of the outcome, a creative use case).

Our selection process is experiential and conducted entirely on Rizzoma. Selected candidates will be invited to a multi-stage assessment. The process will include:

  1. A ‘descriptive’ test with general questions and tasks related to your use of LLMs.
  2. An ‘analytical’ test where you will have one week to work with our internal “RUW” application. You will be asked to find interesting insights (‘nuggets’) and provide critical feedback on the tool itself. Another task will relate to our work on ‘human vs. artificial intelligence’ in prototype warfare.

We will use a combination of automated (LLM-based) and human assessment to review the test submissions. Final candidates will be selected by the project leads.

We intend to fill these positions as soon as possible, so if you’re interested, please apply at your earliest convenience.
