ICAP at Columbia University, a global health leader situated within the Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health in New York City, support immediate public health needs and ongoing recovery efforts in Ukraine, ICAP is collaborating with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to provide technical assistance to Ukraine’s public health system. The priority areas ICAP addresses include antimicrobial resistance response (AMR) prevention detection and response, respiratory disease surveillance, wastewater surveillance for SARS-CoV-2 and other major health threats, and laboratory response network strengthening for emergency preparedness and response.
ICAP seeks Surgical Site Infections Consultant for Project in Ukraine.
Description of the work to be performed, specific project goals, objectives, and any related activities the Consultant is responsible for.
The consultant will work closely with Ukraine Country Representative and other ICAP representatives to support improved capacity to prevent and conduct surveillance of surgical site infections (SSIs) in sentinel hospitals in Ukraine. The consultant will conduct a baseline assessment and generate a report on current SSI surveillance and prevention practices, including review and summary of available data and documentation and in-person visits to surgical wards. With support from ICAP representatives, the consultant will develop materials for, plan, and facilitate competency-based trainings on SSI prevention and surveillance to relevant sentinel hospital staff members. In follow-up to the trainings, the consultant will provide technical support to the same hospitals to implement SSI prevention bundles and SSI surveillance including using data to inform clinical, programmatic, and policy decision-making. Technical support will include SOP development, mentorship, data collection and analysis support. The consultant will provide remote support via email and Zoom, and onsite mentorship and guidance to supported hospitals with travel to the sites in Ukraine upon necessity.
Key expectations/milestones to be furnished by the Consultant
· Review available data and documentation and assess current SSI surveillance and prevention practices in hospitals, including clinical, infection prevention, laboratory, data, leadership, and systemic factors.
· Support facility-based teams’ capacity to implement SSI prevention bundles in select hospital wards using international best practices and quality improvement methodology
· Lead development of competency-based training materials and facilitate trainings on SSI prevention and surveillance, including tools to assess the effectiveness of the trainings.
· Develop standard operating procedures for Ukrainian hospitals to implement SSI prevention bundles, SSI surveillance data collection and analysis
· Provide virtual and in-person technical assistance and mentorship to hospitals to improve their capacity to implement SSI prevention and surveillance practices, including support of a quality improvement collaborative.
· Perform other related duties as directed.
