Background

 The USAID Agriculture and Rural Development Support (ARDS) Project supports broad-based, resilient economic growth through a more inclusive, competitive, and better governed agriculture sector that provides attractive livelihoods in rural areas. The program embraces approaches defined in the U.S. Global Food Security Act of 2016 that emphasizes market-led development for agricultural transformation to generate sustainable growth opportunities for small farmers, small and medium-sized enterprises, and poor rural households. ARDS works with stakeholders to implement a broad array of solutions for market system failures that span the enabling environment, including land markets, policies, governance, and rights, value chains core functions, where the focus is on the meat, dairy, fruit, and vegetable value chains, while integrating and aligning supporting functions and non-farm rural enterprises. The project works at the national and local levels, with a special focus on rural development in southern and eastern Ukraine.

ARDS is implemented by Chemonics International Inc.

Purpose of Assignment

The Translator/Interpreter will provide a wide range of written translation and interpreting responsibilities for ARDS project activities. The translator/interpreter’s written work products should be properly edited in the target language and appropriately formatted as documents.

The Translator/Interpreter will work under the direct supervision of, and report to, the Finance and Administration Director (F&A Director). The post of assignment is the ARDS Kyiv office. The term of assignment, subject to review and satisfactory performance, is through the end of the Project.

Responsibilities

  • Written translation of technical and administrative documents and other project materials related to ARDS project activities and administration of the project.
  • Maintain a register of written translation requests and their fulfillment.
  • Interpretation during project-related meetings, workshops, and/or training events.
  • Participation in project staff and experts’ travels within Ukraine, when needed, to provide interpretation and translation services.
  • Any other tasks assigned by the Chief of Party or his/her designee or independently, consistent with the successful candidate’s qualifications, this Scope of Work, and the requirements of the ARDS project.

Qualifications

  • A minimum of three years of experience in a similar position.
  • proven success fulfilling job tasks and responsibilities similar to those outlined above.
  • Appropriate academic credentials, such as a BA degree or equivalent in translation.
  • Fluent written and spoken English, Ukrainian, and Russian.
  • Ability to provide high-quality consecutive and, when necessary, simultaneous interpretation.
  • Editing skills sufficient to produce a finished, polished translation which a speaker of the target language can read with ease and full comprehension.
  • Computer skills adequate to correctly produce and format documents, including familiarity with standard Microsoft Office software.
  • Ability to work effectively and tactfully under pressure in a multicultural, multilingual team
  • Demonstrated initiative and self-motivation in handling all tasks.
  • The Translator/Interpreter must be available for travel (including overnight stays for up to several days) in Ukraine as required by the overall needs of the project.
