Consulting Editor – Content Creation, Media Literacy, and Online Safety for Children and Teenagers – cooperation between DW Akademie and Suspilne

TERMS OF REFERENCE
DW Akademie is Deutsche Welle’s centre for international media development, journalism training and knowledge transfer. Our projects strengthen the human right to freedom of expression and unhindered access to information. DW Akademie empowers people worldwide to make independent decisions based on reliable facts and constructive dialogue.
DW Akademie is seeking a motivated Ukrainian media professional to support the Suspilne Kids News Team in the period Mai 2025 – December 2025. The consultant will work closely with DW Akademie and Suspilne to mentor young editorial teams and co-develop engaging, age-appropriate, and responsible content tailored for children and teenagers (ages 10–14).
The Consulting Editor will be expected to provide a range of deliverables:
1. Deliverables
Content Development and Editorial Mentorship
● Guide the development of engaging, informative, and age-appropriate news and media content for children and teenagers.
● Advise the team on storytelling formats and editorial strategies suited for younger audiences.
● Mentor team members to enhance their editorial planning and production processes.
Social Media and Platform Optimization
● Share expertise on social media algorithms (Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, etc.) and provide guidance on how to optimize content for each platform to effectively reach and engage young audiences.
● Support the team in interpreting analytics and audience data to refine and adjust content strategies in real time.
● Co-develop methods to increase discoverability and interaction of content across platforms.
Media Literacy and Online Safety
● Consult on the integration of media literacy and online safety principles within the Kids News content.
● Provide strategies and approaches for addressing topics such as digital well-being, misinformation, and safe internet navigation for children and teens.
● Support the development of materials or campaigns to promote media literacy among the young target group.
2. Qualifications
Essential
● At least 5 years of experience in journalism, digital media, or media education in Ukraine.
● Proven experience in working with or producing content for children and/or teenagers.
● Solid understanding of media literacy, online safety, and child-centered communication.
● Familiarity with social media platform dynamics and audience engagement strategies.
● Experience mentoring or training young people or media professionals.
● Strong communication and collaboration skills; ability to work constructively with diverse teams.
● Fluency in Ukrainian (English proficiency is an asset).
Desirable
● Experience in content creation and audience development for TikTok, YouTube, or Instagram.
● Background in educational media, youth engagement, or child psychology.
● Previous collaboration with international media development organizations
3. Working Framework
· Online and offline
· Participation in a mandatory online on-boarding session with DW Akademie and Suspilne
· Participation in the regular (mostly bi-monthly) meetings to provide feedback
· Short narrative reports after key mentorship activities or milestones.
· Expected engagement time frame: Mai 2025 – December 2025.
· Expected working days subject to availability and needs, up to 50 working days, 1-2 working days per week
