The Mental Health Gap Action Program (mhGAP) was launched by the World Health Organization (WHO) in 2008 with the aim of building the capacity of non-specialized healthcare staff in the early detection and management of mental health conditions.
FHI 360 will train government primary healthcare staff on mhGAP in several regions of Ukraine. The healthcare workers will be trained using the WHO mhGAP Humanitarian Intervention Guide. The mhGAP consists of interventions for the prevention and treatment of mental, neurological and substance use (MNS) conditions, including depression, anxiety, stress, grief, epilepsy, psychosis, child mental health and behavioral problems, substance use disorder and self-harm/suicide. The aim of these trainings is to provide the knowledge and skills to diagnose a patient’s mental health condition; case classification; delivery of psychosocial first aid and support pharmacological treatment; and appropriate decision-making on referral pathways.
POSITION OVERVIEW
The mhGAP Trainer will facilitate workshop trainings on mhGAP for non-specialist healthcare workers in each target region, and conduct regular follow-up supervision visits to each health facility (twice a month for 6 months) to support field-level implementation of the program. The mhGAP Trainer will ensure that healthcare workers attain the knowledge and skills to implement the assessment and management guidelines for priority MNS conditions.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND DELIVERABLES
- Prepare the trainings according to WHO’s mhGAP training materials (adapted for Ukraine) and national guidelines.
- Deliver trainings using a combination of modalities including coaching, group discussions, role play, case studies, and demonstrations.
- Prepare detailed training reports including qualitative description of the training sessions, pre- and post-training assessment, and summary of feedback received from training participants.
- Prepare mhGAP field supervision tools and guidelines for the monthly supportive supervision visits to health facilities.
- Conduct regular supervision visits to health facilities of trained staff to support effective implementation of mhGAP.
- Any other tasks assigned.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- An experienced psychiatrist, psychologist or specialist doctor with minimum 3-5 years of professional experience and strong technical skills in the WHO mhGAP-IG training package.
- Trained and/or certified by WHO to conduct mhGAP trainings.
- Prior experience conducting mhGAP trainings in Ukraine is desirable.
- Clinical skills and experience in mental health care and/or management of MNS conditions is advantageous.
- Strong training and supervision skills of healthcare providers
- Fluent in Ukrainian and proficient in English.
