Program / Department Summary

Mercy Corps’ Ukraine response seeks to meet the humanitarian needs of vulnerable Ukrainians and other affected people where they are: displaced inside Ukraine, refugees in Poland, Romania and Moldova, or trapped behind frontlines. Almost all of our impact will be delivered in partnership with Ukrainian, Polish, Romanian and Moldovan civil society organizations through a granting program that matches humanitarian action with capacity strengthening, and with peer international NGOs through a consortium in Ukraine. As Mercy Corps pursues its objectives in the region it will continue to assess the security situation in areas of potential operation, with an eye towards expanding and diversifying programming to include resilience and market-based interventions in addition to direct implementation to meet growing humanitarian needs.

The Position

The Communications Officer (Ukraine) will support the communications team to increase visibility of Mercy Corps in Ukraine to a wide variety of internal and external audiences. S/he will work closely with the Ukraine Communications Manager to support the implementation of the communications strategy and to establish communications resources for the team, support media engagements and other visibility events, and build the overall communications capacity across the response.  

S/he creates new content and contributes to tools and processes for routinely gathering information, and presenting it to wide variety of audiences. S/he supports the development of strategic communications that not only showcase the ‘Impact’ of Mercy Corps Ukraine’s work, but also demonstrates ‘Innovation’ and ‘Influence’ within all programming, reflecting and reinforcing the strategic and cross-cutting objectives for the response.  S/he will adhere to best practice guides and provide support and guidance to program communication leads in their efforts to demonstrate program achievements and integrate success stories into their reports and communications. 

Essential Responsibilities

·       To support the design and implementation of Mercy Corps’ Ukraine Response information and communications activities in Ukraine.

·       Working cross-team, support in the creation of innovative communications products and techniques in order to demonstrate program impact to internal and external audiences.

·       Assist in the production of high-quality impactful testimonies and other communications products, which amplify the voices of affected people.

·       Support with information/communications requests from the wider organization as required.

 AGENCY SUPPORT

·       Monitor Workplace, meetings and other internal updates, and coordinate with program, sector and field office teams, to gather content for and draft updates on Mercy Corps programs.

·       Support in the development of content development and share content on Mercy Corps’ Global internal communications platforms, including relevant Workplace pages, The Hub and The Globe.

·       Contribute to content development and updates of Mercy Corps Ukraine social media pages once/if established.

 COMMUNICATION AND CAPACITY BUILDING

·       Support Mercy Corps Ukraine’s visibility and communication initiatives, ensuring that program communications activities meet donor communications and visibility guidelines.

·       Support field locations to collect images, success stories, and other communications content to highlight program successes, staff well-being, or any other topic as the need arises.

·       Support operations, finance, HR, CARM and MEL teams to improve their communications and information sharing with staff by supporting them in the production of templates, guidelines, briefings, and providing feedback on communications outputs.

·       Actively participate in meetings and processes to promote effective communication practices across the entire country portfolio.

Accountability

Reports Directly To: Ukraine Communications Manager

Works Directly With: Communications team, Policy and Advocacy team, Program teams, Program and Quality team, MEL focal points, supporting departments, HQ focal points

Accountability to Participants and Stakeholders

Mercy Corps team members are expected to support all efforts toward accountability, specifically to our program participants, community partners, other stakeholders, and to international standards guiding international relief and development work. We are committed to actively engaging communities as equal partners in the design, monitoring and evaluation of our field projects.

Minimum Qualification & Transferable Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in journalism, communications, international development or another relevant field.
  • A minimum of 2 years of experience in coordinating and producing written and audiovisual content for donor engagement, public advocacy, media and community relations.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills in English and Ukrainian required, including report development, writing and editing.
  • Excellent computer skills, including experience with Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Publisher.
  • Experience with Adobe’s design suite a plus.
  • Demonstrated ability as a collaborator and facilitator.
  • Demonstrated attention to detail, ability to follow procedures, meet deadlines and work independently and cooperatively with team members.
  • Experience in event planning and media engagement highly preferred
