Position Title: Project Assistant (Capacity Building)

Duty Station: Kyiv, Ukraine

Classification: General Service Staff, Grade G4 

Type of Appointment: Special Short-Term, Six months with possibility of extension

Established in 1951, IOM is a Related Organization of the United Nations, and as the leading UN agency in the field of migration, works closely with governmental, intergovernmental and non-governmental partners. IOM is dedicated to promoting humane and orderly migration for the benefit of all. It does so by providing services and advice to governments and migrants.

Context:

The IOM Ukraine Protection Programme started in 1998 as the Counter-Trafficking Programme to support government and civil society efforts to combat human trafficking and to ensure survivors’ access to assistance and justice. IOM’s priorities have shifted in response to the significant changes in Ukrainian migration context; nowadays IOM offers individual case management and direct service and assistance provision for persons with protection needs because they have experienced trafficking, gender-based violence, exploitation, or conflict-related violence and rights violations; prevention efforts through awareness-raising and community outreach; and capacity development that contributes to humanitarian and development response goals.

Under the overall supervision of the Chief of Mission and the Senior Protection Coordinator, and with the direct supervision of the Programme Specialist (Capacity Building), the incumbent will be responsible for assisting with implementing the capacity building activities for the Protection Programme as well as assisting with a wide range of protection activities in Ukraine in specific locations/oblasts.

Core Functions / Responsibilities:

  1. Provide support to Protection Programme in management of projects, including monitoring of activities and drafting inputs for projects reporting and development.
  2. Assist the Programme Specialist (Capacity Buidling) with conducting capacity building activities for projects by handling logistical matters, organizing content, taking notes, and monitoring impact. Such activities may be national, regional, or local/community, necessitating coordination with representatives of government, civil society, and other relevant stakeholders.
  3. Support the use of capacity building content and tools in consultation with various stakeholders. This may include but not be limited to collating technical input and guidance from IOM staff, implementing partners, and government efforts.
  4. Assist the Protection Programme’s coordination of the work of the Counter-Trafficking NGO Coalition, including by communicating with the NGOs and supporting implementation of their advocacy projects.
  5. Support the Protection Programme’s contribution of technical expertise at various events, coordination structures, and platforms internal and external of IOM and at regional, national and sub-national level, such as assisting the Protection Cluster’s Anti-Trafficking Task Team, and other working groups, including those led by the Government of Ukraine.
  6. Assist in compiling information on national, regional, and local human trafficking trends, counter-trafficking responses, and relevant protection issues for meetings, workshops, briefings, reporting, knowledge products and other internal and external initiatives.
  7. Assist in drafting official and unofficial correspondence in Ukrainian, English and other languages as necessary.
  8. Undertake duty travel based on programme needs.
  9. Perform such other duties as may be assigned.

Required Qualifications and Experience

Education

  • High School degree/Certificate with four years of professional work experience; or
  • Bachelor’s degree in Social Sciences, International Relations, Political Science, Education, Law and International Relations or related field from an accredited academic institution with at least two years of relevant work experience.

Experience

  • Experience with office administration, event planning and other logistical matters.
  • Experience with facilitating capacity building activities.
  • Experience in the thematic area of countering human trafficking, exploitation, and violence, and especially the capacity building pillar.
  • Experience in liaison and cooperation with governmental authorities, UN partners and NGOs, as well as other internal and external stakeholders.
  • Previous work experience in IOM or a UN agency is preferable.

Skills

  • Ability to draft content related to awareness raising/ risk mitigation, on a range of topics.
  • Ability to learn quickly new thematic areas and workstreams related to the protection work of IOM in a variety of contexts.
  • Strong facilitation and public speaking skills.
  • Good communication and writing skills.
  • Proficiency in computer skills, especially with graphic design software and social media tools.

Languages

For all applicants, fluency in English and Ukrainian is required (oral and written).
